Police sources say Father Regis Chikuni, a Roman Catholic priest who had been missing for several days, died in a hit and run accident near the intersection of Prince Edward Road and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.

According to reports, he was struck by a Honda Fit while crossing the road. His body was later located at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary.

Father Chikuni had been unaccounted for since last week before his body was identified at Parirenyatwa Hospital this week.
Police said the priest had no identification on him at the time of the accident, which delayed identification. His remains were taken to the hospital mortuary, and authorities said an official statement will be released soon.

The Archdiocese of Harare had earlier informed congregants during Sunday mass that Father Chikuni was missing.A report was filed with police, and his body was subsequently found at the mortuary at Parirenyatwa Hospital

In a statement released through Archbishop’s Secretary Father Ephraim Murwira, the Archdiocese of Harare confirmed the news.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Father Regis Chikuni. Tragically, he was found at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Hospital,” he said.

Father Murwira said the church takes comfort in the promise of the resurrection and believes Father Chikuni has returned to the loving embrace of the Lord.He added that Father Chikuni’s commitment to his pastoral work and the impact he made in the community will be remembered.
