President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared 15 September – his birthday – as a public holiday that shall be known as the Munhumutapa Day.
“It is hereby declared that the 15th of September every year henceforth shall be a public holiday to be known as Munhumutapa Day,” reads Statutory Instrument 148 of 2026 published Wednesday.
The notice, published in an Extraordinary Government Gazette dated 9 September 2026, was made in terms of Section 2(2) of the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act [Chapter 10:21].
Mnangagwa, who turns 84 this year, was born on 15 September 1942.
Munhumutapa Day is named after the 15th – 18th century Shona empire.
