Caps United, FC Platinum fight out drab draw

As Hardrock, Dynamos fan chaos puts a dent on domestic league

By Auther Chimbgwa

Caps United and FC Platinum Stars settled for an uninspiring goalless draw in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Match Day 14 encounter played at Rufaro stadium on Monday.

Makepekepe missed a glut of opportunities, with Ishmael Wadi, who, by any stretch of the imagination did not have a good game by his lofty standards, notably failing to just direct his effort into a yawning net in the 67th minute when it looked easier to score than to miss.

On the other hand, FC Platinum barely tested Wallace Magalani, in goals for Caps United, and should feel grateful for taking a point to Zvishavane.

In other matches played on Sunday, Hardrock and Dynamos’ showdown at Chahwanda stadium in Kwekwe was abandoned with the opponents tied at 1-1 towards the end after the home side had restored parity from the spot.

Dynamos captain Shadreck Nyahwa was adjudged to have handled inside the box by the referee as he attempted to block a goal-bound effort by Donald Mudadi.

In a bad advertisement for the local league, chaos then reigned supreme as some fans who were occupying the Dynamos stand invaded the pitch protesting the awarding of the penalty, which was converted by Wilfred Mandungu in the 71st minute.

Not to be outdone, sone fans who were housed at the Hardrock stands also ran onto the pitch to confront their adversaries, resulting in free for all scenes which left some fans injured.

The Glamour Boys had flown into the lead thanks to a Misheck Ngwenya’s own goal in the 20th minute.

The match, which was scheduled to start at 3pm, started 30 minutes late in a bid by match officials to accommodate hordes of fans who were still trying to gain entry into the stadium.

It was officially called off at 5.40pm.

In other matches played same day, Manica Diamonds settled for a goalless draw with Highlanders at Sakubva stadium in Mutare.

MWOS made light work of Triangle United when they beat them by 2-0 at Gibbo stadium whilst FC Hunters drew 1-all with TelOne at the Heart stadium in Waterfalls.

In Saturday’s matches, Ngezi Platinum Stars produced a polished performance as they beat a battling Bulawayo Chiefs by 4-2 at Baobab stadium in Mhondoro-Ngezi.

Herentals College ran riot as they demolished former champions Simba Bhora by 4-1 at Rufaro stadium whilst champions Scottland showed no mercy for their former coach Tonderayi Ndiraya’s Chicken Inn when they dispatched them 2-0 at Barbourfields stadium.

AGAMA were involved in a 1-all stalemate with ZPC Kariba at Wadzanayi stadium in Shamva to complete Saturday’s goal rush.

Following Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures, Caps United replace Hardrock at the apex of the league table with 27 points while Hardrock are now second on 26 points pending a ruling by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on the outcome of their abandoned match against Dynamos.

Ngezi Platinum Stars – the only unbeaten side so far this term – remain third, one point behind Hardrock.
