A Beitbridge man has been slapped with a hefty US$5 000 fine for smuggling loads of polony, sausages and chicken from South Africa.
Aison Muzanenhamo (28) was at a police roadblock in Mvuma on Monday with the illegal consignment, according to police spokesperson for the Midlands Province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Midlands is informing the general public of an arrest made for smuggling goods,” Mahoko said.
“A suspect was arrested at a road block along Mvuma road on 27 April 2026 at around 6.30am.”
Circumstances are that a team of police officers were manning a traffic roadblock.
Whilst executing their duty, they stopped a Nissan UD truck, which was being driven by Muzanenhamo.
The vehicle had two other occupants on board.
“Upon searching the vehicle, the police officers discovered that the vehicle had 3 226 kgs of polony, 4 840 kgs of chicken meat and 1 614 kgs of Russian sausages which were all smuggled,” said Mahoko.
Health inspectors and ZIMRA officials were called for verification.
The suspect has since been given a US$5 000 ticket and the motor vehicle is being held at ZIMRA, Gweru awaiting payment of the fine.
“The ZRP warns members of the public to desist from engaging in smuggling activities,” said Mahoko, adding that police would intensify operations, targeting smuggling and other illegal activities.
