Highlanders break winless jinx to claim victory over Chicken Inn
As Scottland, Dynamos drop points in goalless thriller
By Auther Chimbgwa
Highlanders beat neighbours Chicken Inn 3-1 to claim their first league victory this season in a mid-week clash played at Barbourfields stadium on Wednesday.
Bosso fell behind just after 8 minutes but they clawed back in the second half through goals by Mongameli Tshuma, Isaac Ngoma and Prince Ndlovu.
Highlanders have never lost since the beginning of the league season but all their matches had ended in less inspiring draws under new coach Benjani Mwaruwari.
In another Match Day 8 fixture played in Harare, champions Scottland and Dynamos played to a goalless draw in front of a big crowd at Rufaro stadium.
The match was a see-saw affair with DeMbare dominating in the first half while Mabviravira had the lion’s share of possession in the second half.
Star forward Knowledge Musona came closest to breaking the deadlock when his full-blooded free-kick kissed the upright post before flying over the bar at a packed stadium in the early stages of the match.
Scottland had the best of the possession and the chances, Dynamos did well to grind out a draw. The two city rivals are also yet to lose a league match this season.
In another fiery match played at Nyamhunga stadium, ZPC Kariba shared the spoils with Bulawayo Chiefs in a 1-1 affair.
Meanwhile, in Match Day 8 games played last Sunday, Caps United extended their lead at the apex of the log standings by two points when they dispatched out of sorts TelOne by 1-0 at Rufaro stadium.
The goal by striker Takunda Benhura in the 37th minute was enough for the Green Machine to take their tally to 19 points, two ahead of second placed Hardrock who drew 2-2 with Ngezi Platinum Stars at Chahwanda stadium in Kwekwe.
AGAMA settled for a 2-all draw with Simba Bhora at Wadzanayi stadium whilst FC Platinum were also involved in a 2-2 stalemate with MWOS at Mandava stadium.
There was again no joy for bottom placed Manica Diamonds who fell 2-0 to Triangle United at Gibbo stadium in the Lowveld derby.
In Saturday’s only match, Herentals piled more misery on struggling debutants FC Hunters, beating them 2-1 at Rufaro stadium.
It means Nesbert Saruchera’s men are still looking for their first victory in their maiden participation in Zimbabwe’s elite football league.
Following today’s league clashes, Caps United still top the table on 19 points from 8 matches. Hardrock are second with 17 points while Dynamos displaces Ngezi on third with 16 points, albeit on superior goal difference to Ngezi who drop to fourth. Scottland lie on fifth position with 14 points.
All teams have played 8 games each.
