Three juveniles drown in Mberengwa village fish pond

In a sad incident, three juveniles aged 5 and 6 years, drowned in a backyard fishing pond in a Mberengwa village.

Police spokesperson for Midlands Province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the sad incident and identified the deceased as Nokutenda Maidza (6), Tariroyashe Maidza (5) and Adroid Shumba (6) of Village Vengai, Chief Mataga in Mberengwa.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms a report of sudden death concerning the death of three children – two aged 6 and the other, 5 years – in a drowning incident in a backyard fish pond,” said Inspector Mahoko in a statement.

“This occurred on 31 January 2026 around 5pm at Village Vengai, Chief Mataga in Mberengwa.”

Alpheos Shumba (65), the uncle to the now deceased Adroid Shumba, discovered the bodies of the three children floating in a backyard fish pond at his homestead and immediately reported the unfortunate incident to the police.

The other two victims were neighbours.

The pond measures approximately 14 metres long ,10 metres wide and 1.5 metres deep, according to police.

The three bodies were retrieved naked with their clothes strewn on the ground approximately three metres from the pond.

The bodies were taken to Musume Mission Hospital awaiting post-mortem.

“We reiterate the call for parents and guardians of children to keep a close eye on them when playing,” said Mahoko.
