A two-month-old baby girl was Saturday snatched in broad daylight from the hands of her little sister in a shock kidnapping incident that happened in the Gweru city centre.
Police spokesperson for the Midlands Province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident that happened at Edgars Stores veranda at around 2.40pm.
Mahoko said the mother – Faith Jakaza (26) – had briefly left the baby with her six-year-old little sister to go and buy some bananas from a nearby vendor.
“The mother had just finished breast-feeding her and briefly left the baby on the lap of her six-year-old sister going to buy bananas from a nearby vendor,” said Inspector Mahoko in a statement.
“On returning after a few minutes, the mother discovered, to her utter disbelief, that the elder daughter was now without the baby saying she had been snatched away.”
The mother then shouted for help while looking around, but the baby was nowhere to be found.
Mahoko appealed for any information that could help in locating the kidnappers and recovery of the baby.
He added, “In the same vein, we also advise mothers or persons with custody of babies and children to always keep them under close monitoring.”
