Police in Mberengwa have detained seven men who are suspects in an incident in which a 15-year-old local girl was robbed of two cell phones and US$200 cash on Sunday.

The incident, according to a statement by police spokesperson for Midlands province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, happened near Bara Shop, under Chief Maziofa in Mberengwa.

“The suspects threatened the victim, a female juvenile aged 15, with a knife before stealing two cell phones from her worth $200,” Mahoko said.

The seven were named as: Wayne Dliwayo (20), Marvellous Ncube (25), Brighton Zhou (18), Chrispen Siyalumba (25), Shoko Tamuka, Shava Marley (29) of Mberengwa and Nyasha Tongonya (25) of Bikita.

On the day in question, Mahoko said, the suspects approached the juvenile who was on her way home from the shops.

“One of them grabbed her from behind whilst another one threatened her with a home-made knife and ordered her to surrender the two cell phones which were in her possession and she complied,” said the police spokesperson.

Acting on a tip-off, police mounted a road block resulting in the arrest of the suspects.

The victim’s cell phones were recovered together with seven others which the suspects failed to satisfactorily account for.
