A 27-year-old female teacher struck a 15-year-old Grade 7 pupil with a wooden stick and further punched him following a nasty stand-off at a Gwai primary school.

The school teacher was identified as Shyleen Nenduva by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA).

The incident happened on 9 July 2025 at around 10 in the morning at a Primary School in Gwai.

NPA said the teenager was “misbehaving outside the classroom when the offender cautioned him”.

“A misunderstanding then ensued between the victim and the offender,” NPA said in a statement.

“The offender assaulted the victim by hitting him several times with a wooden stick on the back once with a fist on the chest and pushing him onto a desk causing him to land on the ground and the victim sustained a swollen and painful right elbow.”

For the offence, Nenduya was dragged before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court for assault.

She was sentenced to 15 months in jail of which 6 months were suspended for 5 years.

The remaining 9 months were suspended on the condition that the offender performs 315 hours of community service.
