A 37-year-old woman was gang raped and robbed by three men who first struck her with a hammer and a sjambok as she walked home in Waterfalls, Harare Saturday night before committing the heinous crimes.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident.

Chakanza said the woman was walking from Gillstone, Waterfalls to Whitecliff at around 8pm when she got attacked.

“As she approached Derbyshire Waterfalls, she was confronted by three accused persons who suddenly appeared from behind,” Chakanza said.

“One of them was wearing a monkey hat and the other two were wearing sunhats.

“The accused persons demanded money from complainant. Complainant told the accused persons that she had no money or valuables with her.

“One of the accused persons struck the complainant with a hammer once on the back and once on the head with a sjambok.

“The complainant then surrendered US$20 to the accused persons. Afterwards, the accused persons dragged her into a nearby bush.

“They ordered the complainant to remove her clothes quietly and she complied due to fear. They took turns to rape her once without protection and then went away.”

“The complainant was left with her cell phone and she managed to inform her husband Allan Chendambuya who in turn advised her to make a police report,” Chakanza said.

She was then offered transport by a well-wisher who saw her crying while walking along a road.

The Good Samaritan took her to Mbare police station at around 10pm where she made a report.

“The complainant sustained a swollen head and was escorted to Sally Mugabe Hospital for medical examination and treatment,” said Chakanza, who added that further investigations were in progress.
