Police in Harare were on Saturday involved in a high speed vehicle chase of criminals who were later forced to dump a stolen Mercedes Benz Altego truck and fleeing on foot in Warren Park suburb.
The vehicle, valued at US$7,000 was found with some stolen copper cables, according to police spokesperson for Harare province Inspector Luckmore Chakanza.
This followed the theft of the vehicle, with registration number AFK4005, on Saturday in Zengeza 5 Chitungwiza after the owner Justice Gombera had retired for the night leaving car keys inside the ash tray.
Gombera, Inspector Chakanza said, discovered the theft at midnight between Saturday and Sunday.
He reported the incident at St Mary’s police station with the matter passed on to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Vehicle Theft Squad to investigate.
A Mabelreign police patrol team, which was patrolling along Kirkman and Harare Drive, intercepted and pursued the suspects in the stolen vehicle until they stopped the vehicle near Mereki shops in Warren Park before jumping off and fleeing on foot with the keys.
“The vehicle accelerated attempting to evade the team,” said Inspector Chakanza.
“The patrol team pursued the vehicle all the way to Warren Park D roundabout along Bulawayo road. The two accused persons in the vehicle tried to evade the chase, but to no avail.”
The officers searched the vehicle and found some stolen Telone copper cables inside.
Another docket of stolen copper cables was opened at Mabelreign police station.
