Beitbridge offender jailed for attempted murder

By Auther Chimbgwa

A 26-year-old Beitbridge man struck a fellow reveller some multiple times on the head with an empty beer bottle following a dispute over a woman inside a bar.

The incident occurred on 14 June 2025 at around 3 am outside a bar in Dulibadzimu suburb.

The quarrel started when the victim (37), who was with the lady at the time, gave her ZAR50 to purchase some beer, according to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) posted on their X handle.

“The offender later engaged in conversation with the same lady inside the club.

“The offender was offended when the victim followed the lady and reclaimed his money, and assaulted the victim,” NPAZ said.

The victim fell unconscious during the attack and was assisted by bystanders before he was taken to hospital.

A police report was made on the 16th of June 2025 leading to the arrest of the offender.

The offender has been sentenced to 5 years in prison after he was found guilty of attempted murder by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court.

Two and a half years were suspended from the sentence.

“The NPAZ strongly encourages members of the public to desist from physical abuse and senseless assaults. It’s a sobering fact that a significant number of murder cases originate from seemingly meaningless altercations. We advise individuals to seek third-party mediation as a constructive alternative to violence,” the NPAZ said.
