Constable Prince Ndavambi, the 39-year-old Ruwa police officer who was on the run for nearly two weeks after a brutal assault that led to the death of a suspect, has been freed on US$400 bail.

Ndavambi faces murder after he allegedly struck the 30-year-old suspect with a hoe handle leading to his death.

Ndavambi was arrested on Tuesday and taken to court facing murder.

A Harare regional magistrate was Wednesday told that on 27 May this year, Ndavambi arrested the now deceased in connection with assault and theft.

He took the suspect to ZRP Ruwa where he allegedly assaulted and later detained him.

After the assault, the court was further told, the suspect’s condition deteriorated later that evening. He was ferried to Ruwa Rehabilitation Clinic where he died the following day.

Ndavambi appeared in court on 11 June 2025 for initial remand.

He was granted US$400 bail. The matter was remanded to 2 July 2025.

“The law applies to all – including those entrusted to enforce it. Justice must follow due process,” the NPAZ said Wednesday.
