12 dead in three-vehicle road accident involving fuel tanker

Twelve people died Tuesday when a fuel tanker with two trailers collided with a two-tonne truck and a Nissan AD Van which was carrying 12 passengers near Sebakwe River along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic incident that occurred at the 200-kilometre peg near Kwekwe.
Nyathi said the fuel tanker, which was travelling from Harare towards Kwekwe, first sideswiped the two-tonne truck before colliding head-on with the AD Van coming from the opposite direction.
“The tanker dragged the AD Van for several metres before overturning and landing on top of it, trapping all occupants,” Nyathi said.
All 12 people in the AD Van died at the scene. Their bodies were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital for post-mortem.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Meanwhile, eight people died, and 22 others were injured in 128 road traffic accidents recorded during the Africa Day holiday, police said Tuesday.
The fatal incidents represent a slight increase from those experienced last year.
Police said there was a decrease in the number of recorded road traffic accidents from 190 in 2024 to 128 this year.
However, there was an increase in fatalities, with seven fatal crashes in 2025 compared to six the previous year.
The number of people killed rose from seven to eight, while injuries dropped from 35 to 22.
