Mutamba orders seizure of unroadworthy vehicles as Zimbabwe celebrates independence, Easter

By Nkosana Dlamini

Police Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba has directed officers to seize unroadworthy vehicles and further block unregistered buses and taxis from plying the country’s roads over the Independence and Easter holidays.

In a statement Tuesday, Mutamba said police commanders in the country’s provinces have been asked to take “strong action” against unregistered public transport operators.

“Our beloved citizens are enjoined to avoid night travelling to curb road traffic accidents and also utilise vehicles which have been certified fit, insured and registered,” he said.

“Police commanders across the country have been instructed to take strong action against unlicensed buses and pirate taxis (mushikashika) that operate without the required licenses or permits to ensure road safety.”

Mutamba added, “As a result, no pirate taxis or buses with no permits will be allowed to pass through police checkpoints and roadblocks.

“Police officers on deployment will impound all unroadworthy and defective vehicles and arrest any driver found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Mutamba also urged the general public to prioritise their own safety as the nation begins the long holiday.

“As the nation approaches the Easter and Independence holidays, a time of joy, reflection, and family gathering, I urge everyone to prioritise safety and responsibility. The Zimbabwe Republic Police remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for all,” he said.

To achieve this, the police boss called upon every citizen to play their part in upholding law and order.

“My office has made adequate arrangements for safety and security of Independence commemoration gatherings at national, provincial and district level,” he said.

The independence and Easter holidays have often seen families, pilgrims and other citizens travel for different purposes, a situation that has worsened the country’s road carnage.
