Robbers attack guards, snatch corpses from South Africa hospital

By Staff Reporter

Robbers attacked a guard and seized three corpses from a private mortuary in South Africa’s small town of Kuruman in Northern Cape.

Police in Northern Cape said they are working round the clock to get to the bottom of the bizarre incident.

Reports say two unidentified suspects beat up and tied a security guard before fleeing with the bodies of two adult men and a 10-day-old baby girl in the early hours of March 17 this year from the Motheo Wa Bophelo funeral parlour.

The bereaved families and mortuary staff were in disbelief following the incident.

Spokesperson of the funeral parlour James Mangate says the crime is open desecration by criminals..

“We respect the investigation process and will allow the police necessary time to conduct and conclude their enquiries,” he said.

“Understanding the emotional and psychological effect of this event, we have engaged social workers and religious leaders to provide support and counselling to the affected families.

“Our hope is for the safe recovery of the stolen remains so the families can provide their loved ones with the dignified burial they deserve.

“In addition to law enforcement efforts, we have deployed additional investigators and search teams to assist in locating the stolen remains,” Mangate said.

Police have appealed to the public to provide some information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.
