By Staff Reporter

A teenage girl was struck by a train near Chegutu on Monday as she walked along the railway line while wearing some earphones.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) confirmed the incident saying the girl, who apparently did not hear the train approach, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

“…The girl was walking along the railway line when the accident occurred. She was taken to Chegutu District Hospital for treatment.

“The NRZ wishes her a speedy recovery. We urge members of the public to always be on high alert and refrain from wearing earphones when near the tracks,” said the NRZ in a post on its X handle.

Incidents of persons being hit by trains as they walk on the railway line while putting on earphones are not new in Zimbabwe.

In 2023, a man, aged 25 at the time, was injured after he got hit by a train while walking along the railway line at Mpopoma Transit Yard in Bulawayo.

Also in 2022, a boy, aged 17 at the time, died after he was hit by a train while walking along the Harare-Mutare railway line near the 253km peg in Ruwa. He was also wearing earphones when he met the unfortunate incident.
