Two Zimbabweans have been arrested in South Africa’s Limpopo province after being caught in possession of 148 kg of dagga.

Police in South Africa confirmed the arrest of a 25 and 39-year-old at Thabazimbi in the mining town close to the Botswana border after being busted with the illegal substance with a street value of R500,000.

Officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) teamed up with local farmers to track the two in what led to their arrest.

“Police stopped the truck with a male driver and a female passenger and searched the vehicle. They found the trailers loaded with 106 small bags of dagga, 10 big bags of dagga, and two refuse bags of loose dagga,” SAPS spokesperson for Limpopo Province Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said in a statement.

“The dagga weighed 148,5 kg, and with a value of nearly R500,000. A white Scania truck with two trailers used by the suspects was also seized.”

Police said the two were arrested on Thursday and are expected to appear in court soon.

The incidence of crime among foreigners in South Africa, including Zimbabweans is rife.

Last year, three Zimbabweans were among a syndicate of nine people who were handed lengthy prison terms by South Africa’s Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for ripping off tax authorities of R300 million.

The judge ordered effective sentences of 65 years for each of two of the Zimbabweans and 15 years effective for the third.

Again last year, three Zimbabweans were jailed in South Africa for smuggling explosives.
