Man dies in hit-and-run accident by donkey drawn cart

By Staff Reporter

A 23-year-old Tsholotsho man died on Sunday after he was run over by a scotch-cart drawn by donkeys whose guide did not stop after the unfortunate incident.

Police said on Monday that they were investigating the “fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident that occurred along an unnamed road at Mazibulala Line area” on Sunday.

The victim, according to police on their X handle, died on the spot.

“The scotch cart did not stop after the accident,” police said.

Although not as common as those involving motor driven traffic, deaths from scotch cart accidents do occur in Zimbabwe.

In 2021, a then 39-year-old Melusi Sibanda who was cycling on his bicycle, was killed after he collided with a scotch-cart in Filabusi, Matabeleland South.

Police said Sibanda was hit by the pulling bar of the scotch-cart and sustained serious injuries resulting in his death.
