In a shock incident, a 22-year-old Harare man allegedly stabbed and killed his own mother in cold blood and hid her body under the bed before turning on his niece whom he stabbed several times with a screwdriver on the neck, leaving her for dead.
Police confirmed the Wednesday arrest of Nyasha Bandawe in connection with Hilda Drawu’s murder and the minor’s attempted murder.
Bandawe allegedly killed his mother following a misunderstanding, police said.
“The suspect stabbed the victim several times on the neck with a kitchen knife before hiding the body under the bed and locking the bedroom door.
“He then took a screwdriver and went on to stab his 5-year-old niece several times on the neck before fleeing. The injured minor was referred to Sally Mugabe Hospital for treatment,” police said on their official X handle.
The incident follows several incidences in which family members have killed each other in fatal domestic rows.
Last week, a 34-year-old Bulawayo woman brutally stabbed her husband and two children to death after complaining that the family was living in poverty.
Happiness Chimbangu of Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo on 30 January allegedly stabbed Edwin Chimbangu, who was 35 and her two children Promise (4) and Prudence Chimbangu, who was 7 months old.
