Man jailed for killing rival over sex worker

A Bulawayo man who stabbed a rival to death during a fight over a sex worker has been slapped with a seven-year jail sentence after he was convicted for the lesser crime of culpable homicide.

A High Court judge found Alfred Ngwenya, who was 24 when he committed the crime in November 2023, guilty of causing the death of his rival in the second largest city’s Cowdray Park suburb.

During trial, the court was told that on 15 November 2023 at around 3am, Ngwenya and the now-deceased had a quarrel over a sex worker.

The quarrel led to a physical fight which saw Ngwenya stab his rival twice on the thigh and on the back before he fled the scene.

About an hour later, a passerby discovered the now-deceased in a pool of blood and made a report.

Ngwenya was arrested on 17 November 2023 around 1am in Silobela where he had visited an apostolic sect shrine to seek cleansing for having taken the life of another man.

Police also recovered an AK47 CCCP flick knife.

He was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment after pleading guilty t culpable homicide.

Three years of his sentence were suspended on condition of good behavior.
