Zim hip hop artiste Stunner, real name Desmond Chideme, has been dragged to court accused of assaulting a neighbour and his daughter’s friend.
The alleged assault happened in Glen Norah, Harare on 25 August 2024.
The complainants in the case are Catherine Matiza and a minor girl aged 9 who is a friend to the singer’s 9-year-old daughter.
Stunner is charged with two counts of assault. He pleaded not guilty to both when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Batsirai Zishiri on Wednesday.
Prosecutors say the incident was ignited by a fight that ensued between Stunner’s daughter and her three other friends with whom she was playing in Glen Norah’s Specimen area.
During the fight, his daughter reportedly fell and started crying.
In trying to defend his daughter, Stunner reportedly assaulted the 9-year-old girl.
Matiza, it is further alleged, was also attacked by the musician when she tried to intervene.
The court further heard that to avoid the public witnessing the attack, Stunner dragged Matiza into his yard while committing the assault.
As a result of the attack, prosecutors said, Matiza bled.
The matter was reported at Glen Norah police station leading to the musician’s arrest.
When he appeared in court on Wednesday, Stunner, through his lawyer, Dumisani Mthombeni, complained over alleged bias and ill-treatment by police officers who first handled the matter.
Mthombeni said Stunner took his own complainant to the police but this was ignored by the law enforcement agents.
“Your Worship the accused person has complaints against the police who were biased and selective in handling this case,” Mthombeni said.
“The police were selective in taking the complaints and not capturing his report on time.
“He first reported the matter on August 25, under RRB 6105134 at Glen Norah Police Station.
“They didn’t take his case and only made him arrested on this case.”
The magistrate remanded the matter to September 12 for trial.
