A Kenyan serial killer suspected of murder on his own wife plus 41 other women has escaped from police custody.
Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, aged 33, escaped along with 12 other Eritrean migrants who had been arrested for illegally entering Kenya.
The escapees, according to police, cut through wire mesh in the cell and scaled the perimeter wall.
Police said Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women.
He was being detained after the discovery of dismembered bodies of some Kenyan woman in Nairobi.
Officials said he escaped from police custody on Tuesday.
Disciplinary measures, according to authorities, have been instituted against eight police officers suspected to have aided the killer’s escape.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders considering that officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station,” acting police inspector general Gilbert Masengeli was quoted saying in the media.
Khalusha was being detained at the police station after a court allowed detectives seven more days to investigate his alleged crimes before charging him.
