Unknown gunmen stormed a primary school in South Africa’s port city of Durban and fired five shots at a teacher, killing her instantly.
The motive behind the gruesome murder of the 46-year-old Phikiswayo Primary School educator, named Dudu Khumalo, was not known.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident which happened in full view of shocked staff and school children.
“Two unknown suspects fired several shots at the victim before fleeing. The woman was declared dead at the scene,” he said.
School principal Mthokozisi Mchunu said he was in shock over the incident.
“I’m out of words. Seeing her body, gunned down inside the school premises. Five bullets on a young woman, an educator,” said Mchunu.
South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder cases.
In 2023, South Africa recorded a murder rate of 34.4 homicides per 100,000 people, which included 16.95 deaths by stabbing and 4.87 by gunshot per 100,000.
To put this into perspective, South Africa’s murder rate is more dangerous than countries like Iraq, Somalia, Russia, and Mexico
In fact, its 17,805 murders in 2023 (in a population of a little under 55 million) make for a murder rate about five times higher than the global average.
