The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has launched a GOFUNDME appeal to well-wishers touched by the plight of jailed former senator Jameson Timba and 77 party activists who are languishing in remand prison pending trial for convening an illegal gathering.

Now referred to as Avondale 78, the activists were seized from Timba’s home in Harare’s Avondale suburb as they congregated to commemorate the day of The African Child on 16 June 2024.

Their trial starts 29 July 2024.

In a statement, the Timba led CCC said, “AVONDALE 78 GOFUNDME: We urgently appeal for your help to support the #Avondale78, who were brutally and unjustly arrested on June 16th for peacefully commemorating Africa Youth Day at Senator Timba’s private residence.

“During the arrests, they suffered police brutality, resulting in a broken leg for one of the incarcerated women, a damaged ear for another, and multiple injuries to others.

“Despite being denied bail numerous times, they have spent over 35 days in pre-trial detention on trumped-up charges.

“We are raising funds to support the welfare of these heroes of change and their families during this period of unjust persecution and detention. Please join us in standing in solidarity with them and ensure they receive the necessary support they desperately need.”

By the time of publishing this story, £1 676 (US$2 157) had been raised out of 69 donations from a target of  £10 000 (12 872).
