In a shocking incident, a Lupane man struck and killed his 84-year-old grandmother with an axe he had borrowed from a neighbour.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) named the suspect as Logic Nyathi of Mlonyeni Village under Chief Mabhikwa, Lupane and the victim as Lucy Sibanda.

The incident, according to NPA, happened 12 July 2024.

Nyathi borrowed the axe from a neighbour claiming he intended to use it to cut some logs at a nearby forest.

He later used it to end the life of his own grandmother for reasons that were not disclosed in the NPA statement.

The crime was discovered by Sibanda’s daughter who is also Nyathi’s aunt after her attempts to ring her mother failed as her phone was not being picked.

“She sent Zamani Vundla who stays nearby to go and check on the now deceased and he found the body lying on a sofa, in a pool of blood, with deep cuts on the head and neck,” NPA said.

Sibanda’s body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital for examination.

A witness who was herding goats discovered the axe which Nyathi later hid in a bushy area near the deceased’s homestead before vanishing.

Nyathi was arrested on 22 July in Sipepa and was later brought before the Lupane Magistrates’ Court facing murder.

“He was remanded in custody to the 6th of August 2024, pending examination by two doctors in terms of the Mental Health Act,” NPA said.
