Chimanimani pair convicted and sentenced by court for incest

A 17-year-old Chimanimani girl fell pregnant after she was lured into two rounds of sex in one evening by her 30-year-old nephew who had offered her US$1 in exchange for her services.
The incident, according to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), happened in Chimanimani sometime in January this year.
“The first accused person got home and found the second accused person in the kitchen hut,” NPA said while referring to the adult nephew as first accused.
“He offered her US$1 to have sexual intercourse with him and she accepted.
“The accused persons agreed not to disclose the matter to anyone.
“The two engaged in consensual sexual intercourse twice that evening, while the rest of the family was inside the main house which is separate from the hut.
“The matter only came to light when the second accused person discovered that she was pregnant.”
For the act, the two were both dragged to court and convicted for incest by a Mutare Magistrates’ Court.
They were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which 6 months were suspended for 5 years.
A further 6 months were suspended on condition that the two complete 210 hours of community service.
Under Zimbabwe’s criminal code, it is a crime for people to have sex within the prohibited degrees of relationship.
