Police say 85kg of gold has been seized from a Zvimba village in what could rank as the biggest ever heist to be committed in a Zimbabwean home.
In a statement on Monday, police said a three-member gang also made of with US$6 500 cash bonus.
Police did not attach any monetary estimates to the stolen gold although it could go beyond US$6 million.
Police said the robbery took place at around 1.20am on Saturday when the suspects raided a village in the Mashonaland West area from which they made off with the loot.
“Police in Chombira are investigating a case of robbery which occurred at a house in Kanengoni Village, Chiweshe on 6 July 2024 at around 0120 hours.
“Three unidentified male suspects who were wearing face masks and armed with machetes, gained entry into a house through a broken window and attacked the complainant,” police said without naming the victim.
Police said the “suspects ransacked the house and stole US$6 500 cash and 85 kg of gold that was hidden in a wooden cabinet”.
They further appealed for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
