A 29-year-old man was arrested when he fell asleep after raping his 26-year-old victim he held hostage at a Lower Gwelo homestead.

The incident, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), happened on the 17 April 2024 at around 10PM.

The unnamed rapist, it was reported, went to the victim’s homestead where he entered her bedroom through the door which was not locked.

He found the woman watching a movie on her phone with the light was off while her infant was asleep.

The woman did not suspect any foul play as she thought it was her husband who was returning home.

“She got alarmed when the accused person threatened to assault her with a machete and ordered her to pick up her infant and follow him,” NPA said in a statement.

“He force-marched her to a nearby homestead where he used a metal rod to open the door before ordering the complainant to prepare a place for the infant to sleep.

“He ordered the complainant to remove her clothes and raped her. He also assaulted her during the act.

“The complainant managed to escape when the accused person fell asleep and sought refuge at a nearby homestead.

“A police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person.”

For his misdeeds, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in jail.
