Chamisa ally, dozens arrested in police home raid

Activists detained at Avondale, Harare Central, and Waterfalls police stations

Anti-riot police on Sunday raided the home of CCC top politician Jameson Timba whom they arrested together with over 40 youths who had converged to commemorate International Day of the African Child on June 16.

Timba, who was ousted as a senator under Sengezo Tshabangu’s controversial recalls, leads a CCC faction loyal to former leader Nelson Chamisa.

According to a party legislator, Timba were “severely beaten” for convening the event which was at Timba’s Avondale home in Harare.

“The ZRP has arrested Hon Jameson Timba, his son and over 40 youths who were attending a private June 16 Youth Day meeting at his residence.

“Hon Timba and the youths were severely beaten and injured. Timba and 20 others are presently detained at Avondale Police…” Gumbo posted on X, Sunday.

The were taken for detention at three police stations: Avondale, Harare Central, and Waterfalls, the party said.

International Day of the African Child, also known as the Day of the African Child (DAC) is commemorated every June 16.

Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo have banned another youth gathering organised by our youth for the same commemoration.

This crackdown occurs on a day when the world honors the young people who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, demanding better education and the right to be taught in their own language.

The June 16 day remembers the sacrifices of those who fought for quality education in Africa.

Over 100 people were killed and more than a thousand injured in the protests that followed the Soweto Uprising.
