Wife pours hot cooking oil on polygamous husband in row over family budget

A 41-year-old Chipinge polygamist was severely burnt after one of his wives poured hot cooking oil on his face and shoulders during a misunderstanding over how he spent family finances with his second wife.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), his wife, aged 36, was dragged before a Chipinge magistrate charged with domestic violence.

The incident, NPA said, happened on 18 December 2023 when the couple had a misunderstanding with the woman raising issues over how her husband spent money with his second wife.

“The accused person went outside the house and returned with a cup of hot cooking oil. She poured it on her husband’s face and shoulders.

“The complainant suffered severe burns on the face and shoulders,” NPA said.

For the crime, she was sentenced to 24 months in jail. Six months was suspended for five years.

The remaining 18 months were wholly suspended on condition that she performs 630 hours of community service.
