Government, through the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, recently launched the Internet of Things (IoT) technology amid high hopes the innovation will go a long way in developing and transforming the country’s communication systems.
According to Wikipedia, the Internet of things (IoT) describes devices with sensors, processing ability, software and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet or other communications networks.
IoT encompasses electronics, communication, and computer science engineering.
While addressing guests at the Inaugural Internet of Things (IoT) Community Conference attended by various telecommunication service providers in Harare last Friday, ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Tendai Mavetera highlighted the importance of the innovation in fostering development, productivity and innovation in the country.
“The IoT or Internet of Things is revolutionising the way we live, work and interact with technology.
“It refers to the interconnection of everyday objects with internet, enabling them to send, receive data, and communicate.
“IoT has the potential to drive the economy, improve efficiency, enhance productivity and creating opportunities across various sectors. It has the power to transform Ministries such Agriculture, Health, Manufacturing, Transportation and many others.
“By connecting devices and enabling data driven decision making processes, IoT innovations have the potential to enhance efficiency, productivity and competitiveness.”
Mavetera said the platform will foster collaboration, knowledge sharing and innovation in the field of IoT.
“Zimbabwe has recognised the immense potential of IoT which has been a driving factor of the fourth industrial revolution and is committed to harnessing this benefit of our society,” she added.
“We believe that IoT can play a crucial role in our national development agenda, promoting sustainable economic growth and promoting the quality of life for citizens.
“Effective government frameworks are crucial to ensure security of IoT and AI technologies in Zimbabwe.
“We are committed to implementing policies and strategies that will facilitate the adoption and deployment of IoT solutions across various sectors.”
