A Harare magistrate has ordered the release of 13 Zanu PF supporters arrested last year charged with the public violence that led to the death of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Tinashe Chitsunge.
The group was arrested during the period leading to the August elections last year following poll related clashes in Harare’s Glen View high density suburb between supporters of the rival parties.
The accused activists were named in court documents as Cleopas Ndlovu, aged 27, Ruzivo Mapuranga, aged 39, and 11 others.
The activists were accused of disrupting a CCC rally at a Glen View field.
The widely condemned incident ignited fierce clashes that saw Chitsunge’s death in a hail of stone throwing.
The presiding magistrate urged prosecutors to proceed by way of summoning the accused.
