Car veers off road, strikes 3 pupils dead

Three primary school pupils were Tuesday struck and killed by a vehicle on the side of the road while the fourth was hospitalised with serious injuries, police have confirmed.

In a statement Wednesday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident happened at the famous Christmas Pass outside Mutare city.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which three pupils were killed whilst another pupil was injured when a Toyota Fortuner vehicle veered off the road to the left and knocked down the pupils who were crossing the road at the 2km peg along Christmas Pass-Shamu Road, Mutare on 12 March 2024 at around 1500 hours,” Nyathi said.

The victims were named as Blessing Chisaria (9), Silvian Maponde (13) and Strive Maponde (7) all from Grange Toronto, Chirichangu Plot.

“The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured pupil is admitted at the same hospital.

Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be observant, alert and observe stipulated speed limits to safeguard lives. Above all, drivers are implored to abide by the road rules and regulations in order to curb road accidents”, Nyathi said
