Three Mutare police officers face trial after they allegedly connived with a suspect to share part of the US$60 000 cash seized from a woman in Mutare in a recent robbery incident.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the three police officers connived to share part of the cash which had been recovered from a robber, one Nyasha Foster.
The police officers were named as Albert Machona (42), Charles Musiiwa (33) and Tanyaradzwa Mhondiwa (30).
The three were arraigned before a Mutare magistrate facing charges of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer.
“On the 28th of February 2024 at around 1940 hours, the accused persons who are police officers received a call that members of the public in Morningside, Mutare had apprehended Nyasha Foster after he had robbed a certain complainant of US$60 000 at her home.
“The accused persons took Nyasha Foster to the police station where they connived to steal part of the recovered cash.
“They booked Nyasha Foster as an informant and not as a suspect before allegedly releasing him.
“They went to Ireland Private Hospital where the complainant who had been robbed was admitted and misrepresented to her that US$26 000 was all the cash that had been recovered.
“They gave her the US$26 000.
“The complainant raised the alarm leading to the arrest of the accused persons.”
Nyasha Foster was re-arrested on robbery charges.
He will appear in court this Wednesday.
